A Tale of Two Botanists

Rupert Barneby and Dwight Ripley

Prof. Scott Rawlins will present A Tale of Two Botanists at our April meeting. He will offer us a look at the lives and work of two British botanists who conducted the first comprehensive survey of Southwestern U.S. flora. Rupert Barneby and Dwight Ripley were partners in life as well as work for 50 years. Their circle of acquaintances in England included the well-known Auden, Spender, and Isherwood. Please join us for a look at an amazing collections of artifacts from China on display at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology: Secrets of the Silk Road

Penn Museum is pleased to announce that its landmark exhibition from China, Secrets of the Silk Road, will now open to the public with the full complement of artifacts and mummies for a limited time only, beginning Friday, February 18. Penn Museum will extend day and evening hours to help accommodate those who wish to experience this extraordinary exhibition during its limited run.

Join us at our next meeting for a tavelogue presentation by Michael and Michael. Treat yourself to a vacation in Southeastern Texas –vicariously– with Michael LoFurno and Michael Thompson as they present photos from their January 2011 birding trip to Brownsville, Texas and the lower Rio Grande Valley.

A lush sub-tropical paradise? Well, not exactly, but the birding is indeed exceptional. The Brownsville-McAllen Texas area is a Mecca for birders hoping to add that stray Mexican specimen to their US bird list. It is a perennial meeting place for migrants and vagrants and an indispensable stop for birders doing a Big Year.

Cumberland Co. Winter Eagle Festival

Please join us for one what is becoming an annual trip to the Cumberland County Winter Eagle Festival in Mauricetown, NJ. This festival has provided excellent opportunities to see bald eagles and other birds of prey in the past. Be sure to dress warmly for walks along the fields and forests bordering the Maurice River.
