A Tale of Two Botanists

Presentation by Scott Rawlins

Rupert Barneby and Dwight Ripley were “amateur” botanists whose fascination with plants led to the discovery of a number of new species as well as the first comprehensive survey of southwestern U.S. flora. Equally interesting was the nature of their personal lives. Partners for almost 50 years, Barneby and Ripley were part of a privileged group of ex-pats from Great Britain whose circle of friends included Auden, Spender and Isherwood. During the course of a 60-minute, illustrated lecture, the professional and social lives of this fascinating couple will be presented and analyzed.

Birding the Lower Rio Grande Valley

A Tavelogue Presentation by Michael and Michael

Treat yourself to a vacation in Southeastern Texas –vicariously– by joining Michael LoFurno and Michael Thompson as they present photos from their January 2011 birding trip to Brownsville, Texas and the lower Rio Grande Valley. A lush sub-tropical paradise? Well, not exactly, but the birding is indeed exceptional. The Brownsville-McAllen Texas area is a Mecca for birders hoping to add that stray Mexican specimen to their US bird list. It is a perennial meeting place for migrants and vagrants and an indispensable stop for birders doing a Big Year. This presentation is chock full of bird photos so, please, join us.

Video Presentation: Ocean Odessey

FROM THE TINY…TO THE TITANIC

See tiny damselfish in their splendid coral reef habitat. Witness sperm whales up close and the  graceful ballet of giant manta rays.  Discover ocean oddities such as marine iguanas of the Galapagos, the only seagoing lizard, and the huge Mola Mola off California, an ocean sunfish that reaches spans of up to fourteen feet. Watch whale sharks cruising through the mist at a spawning event in Belize and a pugnacious garibaldi fish protecting his nest. And much, much more!

From the spectacular installation at the Smithsonian’s Ocean Hall comes an Ocean Odyssey…

In 2008, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. opened the largest exhibit  in its history, the Sant Ocean Hall. A key feature of the hall is the Ocean Odyssey presentation-eight high-definition projections that wrap 220 feet of the hall’s upper bay.

The Smithsonian commissioned filmmaker and ocean conservationist Feodor Pitcairn to create this one-of-a-kind installation. A pioneer in underwater HD productions, Pitcairn traveled with his team to some of the world’s most remote and magical ocean places to capture stunning footage of marine ecosystems

CHOCOLATE: A contemporary look at a perennial favorite.

Presented by Scott Rawlins

In recent years recent years, chocolate has become the subject of numerous books, museum exhibitions and marketing campaigns.  Chocolate has been heralded as a health food and a mood enhancer.  It now rivals wine as a subject of research by food experts.   What is the truth about this substance that was once an exclusive drink of the Maya elite and eventually came to be one of the most ubiquitous flavors in the world?  During the course of an illustrated lecture, the natural and cultural histories of chocolate will be presented, including a look at current trends in production and advertising. The lecture will be followed by a chocolate tasting where participants can compare the flavors of chocolates produced from specific varieties of beans, as well as sample some new products using a surprising combination of ingredients.

Scott’s previous talk on chocolate was fascinating. It’s time for an update and to hear about current trends, new perspectives and new findings. If you missed his last talk you especially won’t want to miss this event.

O Soil Mio: a Lecture by Scott Rawlins

Like most cultures (with the possible exception of highly industrialized countries), Italy’s cuisine is related to its environment — the climate and the geology, as well as various biotic factors.  The surroundings influence history and history influences culture.  This program begins with a cursory examination of the Italian environment, describing a few of the relationships between the natural world and human practices typically associated with this republic.  The second part of the program focuses on Italian cuisine, and how this developed an a natural outgrowth of the relationship between the land and its people.

Scott Rawlins is an Associate Professor in the Fine Arts Department at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA where he teaches scientific illustration, drawing and design. In addition to his training as a medical and biological illustrator from the University of Michigan, Scott holds degrees in biology and museum education from Earlham College and George Washington University respectively. Currently, Scott is the Board President of the American Society of Botanical Artists. A former museum curator, Scott maintains contact with the museum world as a research assistant at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. His works are exciting with exquisite detail.
